Interview with Cicero-North Syracuse Head Football Coach Steve Ellis
|
|
|
Mike Lindsley recently caught up with Cicero-North Syracuse Head Football Coach Steve Ellis. The two talked about the regular season, the program's work in the community and his involvement with other sports programs at the school.
L: How about some surprising players on your squad this year who made a major impact?
E: No real surprises. The kids who we thought would be productive have been.
L: What other teams should people watch out for in some of the other classes?
E: To be honest, I don't follow the other classes all that much. I just don't have the time to do so. I haven't even watched a college or pro game yet this fall!
L: What made you most proud during the regular season?
E: That our kids never stop playing and always give a tremendous effort on Friday nights.
L: If someone who had never heard of CNS football asked you about the program what would you say?
E: Nice group of kids to work with in the program and the facilities are second to none. Plenty of opportunity for success and the program has improved and continues to do so each year!
L: How do you feel about the imbalance in the number of schools in each class due to the state-set enrollment guidelines
for classifying football?
E: I don't know that there is a whole heck of a lot you can do about it really. No matter how you split it up, there will always be some schools that don't have the same enrollment as the other schools in their class.
L: You guys do a lot in the community. Your players seem to gravitate to that. I saw you guys out at Moe's and everyone
had a good time. You must feel good about that.
E: Absolutely! Our kids and booster club like to try to work with the community because we ask so much of them through fundraising. Plus, it's a great opportunity to do some team building stuff off the field. We even have a project we are doing with the unity acres program that helps the needy and unfortunate people. Kids are bringing in stuff to take over to them in an effort to give back.
L: CNS has had success in other sports too. How closely do you get to work with some of the other coaches, both on and
off the field?
E: Well, until last year, I also coached boys outdoor track and worked with some great coaches in that program for the past 10 years. And from time to time I see some kids in the weight room after school from other sports. But, most of the coaches pretty much take care of their own kids for their sports. Also, we are so large that it's tough to get a chance to see the other coaches and work with them unless you coach with them.
L: Thanks coach.
E: No problem. Thanks for the interview and I always enjoy speaking with you Mike!
